The participants in a discussion in May 1987 of some of the ideas and texts of this paper--Jeff Gibbens, Susan Parenti, William Brooks, Herbert Brün, Ja'acov Ziso, Lesley Olson, and Candace Walworth--were, through their responses that afternoon, helpful at several stages of the writing process. Several brief excerpts from the transcript of that discussion are included in the text. The speakers are identified by their initials.
Conversations with others also played a role: Drew Krause, Sever Tipei, Arun Chandra, Mark Sullivan, Barbara Freeman, Larry Ende, Kenneth Gaburo, Mark Freeman, Chou Long, David Kelley, Larry Richards, Tucker Robison, to name a few.
Thanks to Keith Johnson for suggestions of sequence and layout.
Many of the concepts herein developed and connected, including that of the power of the respondent, I learned in classes and conversations with Herbert Brün.
