Hello, about me

Francisco grinding glass

Hello, my name is Francisco E. Vélez Álvarez, and I like working with data. I am currently a student at The Evergreen State College in beautiful Olympia, Washington. I will graduate with a B.A. in Mathematics in 2019. I have been active in different projects at Evergreen supporting both faculty, staff, and students.

My work

I am the director of the Greater Olympia Astronomical Society. We are a group of people who like to learn about our place in the universe. When the weather cooperates, you will find us around town or on top of hills looking into the night sky. We offer education to the community, from how to use a telescope, and how to build one.

I work with data. I enjoy the stories it can tell us about the world we belong. I started working with data fairly young when I first discovered Microsoft Excel. Although Excel is my bread and butter, I found other tools that help me prepare and present the data for human comsution. I have also found the how stories make data more powerful.
